Jack has a Milk Allergy

Jack is an alley cat who lives in Sydney, Australia. He has to be very careful because he has an allergy to milk.

When the summer is really hot his mum gives him dairy free icecream and a soft drink. Jack knows that his mum and dad must check all his food before he can eat anything. He knows that he might get sick if he eats any of his friend's food without asking his mum or dad first.

At school his teacher gives him a nice fruit drink instead of milk. His teacher knows him because he wears a bright red badge on his collar. He feels special and safe.

Parent's Handy Hints

If your family has a background of allergic disorders, the following general measures considered to be good practice

Encourage breast feeding. Breast feeding may diminish, but does not prevent, the development of allergy in infants.

Adopt an approved infant formula similar to breast milk if necessary.

Introduce solid foods at 4-6 months ensuring early solids are low allergenic foods approved by a dietitian.

Introduce cow's milk products no earlier than 9-12 months as part of the diet.

A "D" on food products indicates presence of dairy/milk ingredient. For more details on labels, check our Hidden Ingredients | Food Alerts

The message is clear: Read Labels thoroughly every time you shop. Remember that recipes can change occasionally.
