Allergen specifics

The most common triggers of food allergic reactions in childhood are peanuts, tree nuts, milk and egg.  Common triggers of food allergy in adults are fish, shellfish, peanut and tree nuts.  Insect sting and bite allergies, such as tick, are more common in adulthood.

Latex allergy is more common in health professionals who often use latex and children with Spina Bifida or kidney condition who undergo frequent medical procedures. Those with latex allergy can develop particular food allergies such as banana and avocado allergy.

In Australia, there has been an increase in the number of individuals diagnosed with particular food allergies such as lupin and kiwi fruit allergy. These are called emerging allergens as doctors are beginning to see more reported cases of severe reactions to them. Those with peanut allergy need to be aware of lupin in bakery type foods and lupini seeds sometimes used in salads as some people react to both legumes (peanut and lupin)

Whilst not as common as childhood development of allergies, adults can develop food allergy in adult life even after they have been eating the foods without a problem for years.

If you suspect you have had an allergic reaction, avoid that allergen and talk with a doctor with experience in food allergy.  Never self-diagnose or rely on anecdotal information.
