New look EpiPen® adrenaline Auto-Injector

With the arrival of the new look EpiPen® into the Australian market, it will mean that until late 2012 you may see both the original and the new look EpiPen® autoinjector devices.

If you or someone you know receives the new look EpiPen® from the pharmacy, they will need to make sure they have the Action Plan for Anaphylaxis that matches the adrenaline autoinjector they have.

It is important to understand that the new look EpiPen® and EpiPen® Jr. have the same

autoinjector mechanical properties and contain the same dose and formulation of

adrenaline. The needle gauge (bore or diameter) and length are exactly the same as the

original version of EpiPen® adrenaline auto-injector devices. Importantly, the method

of administration of the auto-injector is exactly the same.

Key changes and features of the new look EpiPen® include:

  • New colour coding to easily determine the safety release end (blue) and needle end (orange). Recite the following rhyme to help you remember how to administer: Blue to the sky, orange to the thigh.
  • Easy grip body(oval shape) for easier handling
  • Orange end extends over needle after use.
