Sally has a Seafood Allergy

Sally lives in the warm oceans around Australia. She likes it there because she has a lot of friends to swim around with. She has to be very careful because she has a seafood allergy.

Her mother and father tell her what she can have at feeding time because some of the fish will make her sick if she eats them. Staying safe is important because she likes to visit her friends.

Her best friends are Rex the dog and Jack the cat. On sunny days they play on the beach. She knows that she cannot get too close to them because their owners feed them pet food that could have seafood in it. If they lick her on the face, she could get sick and have to go to hospital. She likes to stay safe.

Parent's Handy Hints

If you have a dog, cat, or other pets, be careful to read the labels before purchasing their petfood. Some petfoods contain fish products that could put your child at risk when close contact is made with the animal. It is also important to take care in a home or office that has an aquarium/fish tank. Some fish foods contain shrimps, prawns, etc, that could cause a reaction when close contact is made with the aquarium/fish tank. For children who react to airborne allergens, it is advised to keep them away from the aquarium/fish tank.

Avoid food from a fish and chip shop. Sometimes the chips may be cooked in the same oil with their fish. Obvious seafood restaurants need to be avoided, as possible food contamination with the allergen is high. Caution should be taken in other restaurants with large seafood selections on their menu.

Chicken nuggets/fingers and fish nuggets/fingers look the same. Your child could accidentially eat fish nuggets/fingers mistaking them for chicken.

Worcestershire sauce contains anchovies which can cause a reaction. It is important to read labels at all times, as some chinese produce and pasta sauces contain worcester sauce.Caesar Salad dressing and a Bloody Mary cocktail also contain worcester sauce as part of their ingredients.

Prawns and other seafood are often cooked on Bar-B-Q's. Cook your child's food on alfoil to be sure no other food comes in contact with it. You could ask restaurants to cook your child's food the same way.

Care must be taken when a group of people are eating prawns with their fingers. If they do not wash their hands afterwards, there is a high risk of contamination on everything touched there after, eg; door handles, handing a drink to your child, etc.

Care must be taken around a wharf, marina or on a boat that previously had fishermen, their catch or fish bait on board. It is also important to take care when you take your allergic child to a marine park or zoo. In the event of a marine show, remember to seat your child away from the front row. This can be a high risk area for splashes and close contact with the marine life. It can only add extra stress on to your child who will not enjoy the show if a seal gets too close.

Some glues used eg: the back of stamps or envelopes may contain fish protein.

Always check any health food produce as they may contain fish oils.
